In its pursuit of these goals it has mastered four timing technologies: mechanical, quartz, Kinetic and Spring Drive. Unique to Seiko watches are its ability to further the art of watch making from its own in-house research and development units. Each development over the years has enabled the next to be created. The Kinetic and Spring Drive movements are solely unique to Seiko. The latest feature of Seiko watches is the very eco friendly solar powered movement.
Since introducing the world’s first quartz watch in 1969, Seiko watches have moved on to developing many more firsts such as its world famous Kinetic range and even high spec design forerunners such as the Spring Drive. Seiko is planning a space venture with a private individual who also plans to spend a week in space and even venture outside the craft for a spacewalk using this new technology. The aptly named “Spacewalk” Seiko watch will have to combine accuracy and reliability with lightness and intense strength, whilst being exposed to temperatures between -20 Degrees to + 70 Degrees Centigrade. These are conditions where traditional mechanical watches are usually unable to maintain accuracy.
Founded over 130 years ago, Seiko watches still enjoy uninterrupted production as one of the world’s oldest watch companies and still run by its original founder’s, Kintaro Hattori, descendants. With something for everyone, from Dress to Sports watches, Premier lines to water sport fans favourite, the Velatura, Seiko has a niche in every corner of the market. Its big heart and clever designs making it a household name.
Premier Kinetic Perpetual Calendar – part of the Seiko mens watches range, this is a combination of the Auto-Relay technology and Kinetic movement. The advantage of this is that the date will be correct until the year 2100. Its calendar displays the day, date, month and year, and the watch is accurate to 1 second a day. The kinetic movement generates its own energy from the wearer’s movement. If the watch senses that it is not been worn, it will seek to extend its power reserves by temporarily shutting down its time display until that watch is moved again. A sudden burst of hand movement then re-sets the time. This sleep mode can exist for up to four years.
Sportura Collection - born from Seiko’s relationship with motorsport, and more recently the Honda Racing F1 team and Jenson Button, a partnership that gave Seiko watches an insight to the requirements of timing motor races, and led to the creation of a range of chronograph only models. Seiko’s long record of timing major sports events dates back to the early 1960’s when the International Olympic Committee awarded the company the prestigious contract to time the 1964 Summer Olympic Games.
